Around Wheal Rose

Centrally located in the heart of Cornwall for easy access to the whole region, Wheal Rose is a great base for your holiday.

BEACHES

Cornwall is famous for its wonderful beaches, and there are a wide range close by to choose from. Portreath beach is a soft sandy beach popular with young families. It has café, toilets and carpark. It is a 30 minute cycle ride direct from the campsite using the mineral tramway trail or just 15 minutes by car.

Porthtowan beach is the closest beach and is 3 miles away from the campsite. This sandy beach is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and sand dunes and is full of the summer, surfing vibe, with great café’s and a children’s playground just off the beach. It is an award winning blue flag beach set in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and manned by lifeguards throughout the summer months.

From the beach at low tide you can walk to the neighbouring and equally stunning beach at Chapel Porth – host of the World Belly Boarding Championships. Just make sure you walk back before the tide comes in!

Perranporth beach is 8 miles away and has something for everyone, with three miles of golden sands, cafes, lifeguards, waves to surf and a tidal pool. There’s plenty of room to have family ball games or explore the rock pools.

WALKING & CYCLING

The Cornish Mineral Tramways provide a perfect way to explore the history of the area. The 60km network of trials is mainly traffic free and follows the ancient tramways used to transport copper and tin. You can step straight onto the Portreath Tramroad trail (part of the the Coast-to-Coast) from the campsite.

Whilst keen walkers and cyclists can go across Cornwall in a day on the Coast to Coast path, there are also a variety of local trails to choose from. The Tehidy trail leads through Tehidy Country Park which is set in the largest area of woodland in West Cornwall and contains walks and cycle paths, café and a wild bird lake. From here you can access over 250 acres of woodland, with a number of technical cycle trails to enjoy.

The Great Flat Lode trail is a circular route and is takes you through the heart of Cornwall’s mining history. The remains of Cornwall’s last tin smelter can be visited near Carnkie and you can climb Carn Brea, an ancient fortified hill settlement, for incredible panoramic views.
